The SVG format

An SVG contains no pixels but drawing instructions: lines, curves, colours. That’s why it stays sharp at any size and is perfect for logos and icons. Many platforms, though, only accept raster images, and that’s when you need to convert it.

Questions about the SVG format

How do I open a SVG file?

Usually a double click is enough: operating systems and the most common programs recognise it. If the program or website you use won’t accept it, you can convert it here to a more common format, for example PNG.

What extension do SVG files have?

.svg. The MIME type is image/svg+xml.

Does converting a SVG lose quality?

It depends on the target format: to lossless formats (PNG, FLAC, WAV) nothing is lost; to compressed formats (JPG, MP3, MP4) you can choose the quality to balance size and result.
