JPG

JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)

The photo format par excellence. It compresses the image by discarding details the eye barely notices, so a 12-megapixel photo weighs only a few megabytes. Any device can open it, from an old phone to a photo lab’s printer.

Best for
Photos, pictures to attach to emails and online forms, printing.
Limits
Text, logos and sharp edges show halos; it has no transparency and every re-save loses a little quality.

Questions about WEBP and JPG

Why do some websites save images as WEBP?

Because it’s lighter and pages load faster. The downside is that not every program opens it.

Are my WEBP files uploaded to a server?

No. The conversion from WEBP to JPG happens entirely in your browser, using your device’s computing power. Files aren’t sent or stored anywhere: when you close the page they’re gone from memory too.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 100 files at a time. There’s no fixed size limit: it depends on your device’s memory. On smartphones it’s best to work in smaller batches with heavy files such as videos.

Does it work on iPhone and Android?

Yes, with up-to-date Safari, Chrome, Firefox, Edge and Samsung Internet. On phones, converted files end up in the Downloads folder or the Files app.

What quality should I choose for JPG?

For photos to share or post online, a quality between 75 and 85 gives light files with no visible flaws. For print or archiving go up to 90-95.

Do I need an internet connection?

Only to open the page (and, the first time, to download the components needed for that type of file). After that the conversion keeps working even if the connection drops.
